Carol J. Spack, Sculptor

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My sculpture reflects an interest in the structures and patterns of nature which we frequently overlook. These patterns are often the language of life and growth.

Through the aesthetics of bronze sculpture, fleeting or otherwise overlooked patterns are revealed. We then pause and see these textures and forms in memorable ways. We might then see similar patterns elsewhere in nature, such as in our own finger prints, or in the patterns left in sand at low tide, or in the heaving earth after a frost. I find a beauty in these traces of time and nature. Once in place, this permanent work assumes a subtle role. My goal is to enhance an existing space and raise the viewer’s awareness in order to create a sense of place. The work, in its form and texture, invites the viewer to approach and touch.

A lifelong interest in the figure and animals is expressed in my bronze animal and figure sculpture. The work is really a kind of portrait sculpture. I work from life, often in the field, and strive to capture the essence and the individual spirit of each subject. An artist's education comes from many sources. My deepest gratitude is to Mr. Ralph Rosenthal who taught the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Saturday studio classes for over seventy years. For me , it was in Mr. Rosenthal’s Saturday classes that I learned the foundation that continues to this day.

I work primarily in bronze, while clay, plaster and most recently colored resin and rubber provide other means of expression. I offer my work in bronze because it is a beautiful material whose history in artistic expression spans styles, periods and cultures. My pleasure is in making the work in clay and continuing the artistic expression through to the foundry. And with that final step of working on the bronze at the foundry I leave my hand on the work.
